Cosmetics comes from the Greek word κοσμητική τέχνη (kosmetikē tekhnē), which means "clothing and ornamentation techniques", from κοσμητικός (kosmētikos), "skilled in the order or set" and that of κόσμος (cosmos), which means, among others, "order" and "ornament".
Generally Cosmetics are substances used to enhance the appearance or odor of the human body to make it more interesting. They are generally a mixture of chemical compounds, some of which comes from natural sources, synthetic lot.
archaeological evidence of cosmetics dates at least from ancient Egypt and Greece. According to one source, the initial major developments include:

•     Castor oil by the ancient Egyptians as a protective balm.
•     Skin cream made from beeswax, olive oil and rose water are described by the Romans.
•     Vaseline and lanolin in the nineteenth century.
•     Nivea Creme in 1911.

In the U.S., the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) which regulates cosmetics, defines cosmetics as "intended to apply to the human body for cleansing, beautifying, promoting attractiveness, or alter the appearance without affecting the body structure or function." This broad definition includes, also, any material intended for use as a component of a cosmetic product. The FDA specifically excludes soap from this category.


Cosmetics include skin care creams, lotions, powders, perfumes, lipsticks, fingernail and toe nail polish, eye and facial makeup, towels, permanent waves, colored contact lenses, hair colors, hair sprays and gels, deodorants, hand sanitizer, baby products , bath oils, bubble bath, bath salt, butter and various kinds of products. A subset of cosmetics is called "make-up," which refers primarily to colored products intended to alter the appearance of the user. Many manufacturers distinguish between decorative cosmetics and care cosmetics.


The preferred use of cosmetics in many points in Western history. For example, in the 19th century, Queen Victoria publicly declared makeup improper, vulgar, and acceptable only for use by the actor.
Beauty products are now widely available from a dedicated internet only retailer, which has recently been joined online with established outlets, including major department stores and traditional brick and mortar retailer of beauty.


Although modern, make-up has been used mainly by women traditionally, a gradual increase in the number of men using cosmetics is usually attributed to women to improve their own features or cover the face. Concealer is commonly used by cosmetic-conscious men. Cosmetic brand cosmetic product release, especially tailored for men, and men using products such as increasily more common.
